Telecommunications Industry: Salaries of MTN, GLO, 9Mobile, and Airtel

Introduction

Daily Independent in 2013 reported that no GSM network operator in Nigeria has ever recorded a deficit in their balance sheet since inception. MTN and the others. This is quite impressive when looked at from the network providers’ perspectives. However, it’s expected that as these firms grow in revenue and profit, it should also reflect in the salary structure of its workers. Particularly the Call Centers Agents that are saddled with the lion’s share of the herculean responsibilities of attending to millions of Nigerians daily.

Recent findings however, has perhaps shown that the salary structure of some of these network providers is not commensurate to efforts put in by some of its staff. This is taking into consideration the fact that, with the figures recorded by the network providers yearly, one may not help but think that anyone that works in any of these telecom companies must be killing it with a fat salary running into multiples of millions. But this is not the case of contract graduate workers that make up most of what’s popularly known as Call Center Agents.

Recent rise in outsourcing has made these contract staff to work more and seem to earn less. The idea about outsourcing these low level staff is simply to cut costs. And the impact of this move is so huge considering the fact that these call centers remain the first point of call for most of the new graduate entrants in the sector.

The Call Center Agents however do receive bonuses, loads of free phone credits and medicals, yet the benefits offered them by the companies are not anywhere near what the full time staff, even in the not so high cadres, enjoy.

From research, the salary structure of the following network providers are thus as follows;

Conclusion

One interesting thing about the way these leading telecom companies in Nigeria pay their workers is the fact that two employees hardly earn the same amount, even when they’re at the same level and in the same department. Some of the employees said that location, individual performance, and negotiation skills are some the factors that cause the differences in their pay package.
